Iconic Character Project

Adapted by Clare Parker - Original concept by Joe Kucharski

For educational purposes only

This project will explore the iconic elements of character and dress. Students will evaluate what makes these characters instantly recognizable and recreate these elements through modern fashion, historical clothing, dance costume, and futuristic clothing.

Select An Iconic Character
Select ONE iconic character for approval. You will randomly select a decade out of a hat for the “historical clothing” part of the assignment, a style of dance of your choosing for the “dance costume”, a random circumstance out of a hat for the “futuristic clothing” element, and a modern style of your choice

Evaluate Your Icon
Using the character analysis sheet as a jumping off point, write a paragraph describing in detail the visual elements of your iconic character i.e. clothing, accessories, hair, etc. If there are iconic symbols, accessories, animal sidekicks, or other visuals related to their story but not a part of their costume, feel free to add in those details.

World of the Play Collages
Collect emotional research imagery for each of your characters’ four looks and compile into FOUR separate image board collages. Each “look” should be on their own page with clear headings. Your finished boards should be a minimum of 8 ½”x11 and should be submitted via Canvas.

Research/Inspiration Boards
Collect clothing-specific research imagery for each of your characters’ four looks and compile into FOUR separate image board collages. Each “look” should be on their own page with clear headings. Your finished boards should be a minimum of 8 ½”x11 and should be submitted via Canvas.

Renderings
The final element of this project will be four 11x17 costume renderings. You may choose
traditional collage techniques or digital. Please note that there will be minimal instruction on how to use digital mediums, so please choose your medium wisely. These renderings should be submitted physically or digitally via Canvas and in color.

Presentation
For the final presentation, please display your completed renderings surrounding the original image of your iconic character. Be ready to speak about your original iconic character and how they influenced your design choices, historical era, genre, etc.
